Indian Dairy Trials Enhance Milk Fat for Higher Farm Revenue

The National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology (NIANP) in India is conducting a study to enhance the economic value of milk by increasing its fat content. According to Dr. Artabandhu Sahoo, Director of NIANP, ideal milk should contain 13 percent total solids with a base of 4 percent milk fat. Current cooperative pricing structures show that increasing milk fat from 3.8 percent to 6.8 percent can raise the farmgate price from 32 to 38 rupees per litre.

NIANP has partnered with the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) to implement field trials aimed at validating these nutritional strategies under commercial conditions. The trials are being conducted across several milk unions, including Kolar and Chikkaballapur, which supply to the Bengaluru market. The study, which began three months ago, will continue for a year to assess performance across different seasons.

The synthesis of milk fat is influenced by an animal's biological structure and environmental factors such as geographical location and climate. Dr. Sahoo indicates that higher temperatures can negatively impact milk quality by diluting its nutrient density. To counteract these effects, the trials are utilizing specific nutritional supplements. Preliminary results show improvements in milk fat content, livestock fertility, and lactation cycles.

This study is significant for farmers, as fat content is a major factor in determining milk prices. The trials aim to provide a scalable model for improving milk quality and economic returns for dairy farmers across India.
