Karnataka Milk Federation: A Pillar in India's Dairy Sector
The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), headquartered in Bangalore, Karnataka, has emerged as a pivotal force in India's dairy industry. Known widely for its flagship brand 'Nandini', KMF is the second-largest dairy cooperative in India, operating an extensive network of milk unions that facilitate efficient milk collection and distribution across the country and internationally.
Financial Performance
In the fiscal year 2022-2023, KMF surpassed a significant milestone with its revenues exceeding INR 17,000 crores, approximately US$ 2.3 billion. This achievement underscores KMF's influential presence and operational prowess within the dairy sector.
Significant Events and Collaborations
KMF recently entered into a partnership with Chai Point, a leading tea café chain, to provide services during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. This collaboration aligns with KMF's broader strategy to extend its market reach during high-profile events. Additionally, KMF set a new state record by collecting 1.06 crore litres of milk in a single day, showcasing its capacity and efficiency.
Company Plans and Initiatives
Looking towards the future, KMF is focusing on diversifying its product portfolio with an emphasis on value-added dairy products. The federation is pioneering sustainability initiatives, such as introducing biodegradable corn-based milk packet covers, spearheaded by its affiliate, Bamul. Despite challenges like unsold inventories of 2,100 tons of milk powder and 800 tons of butter, KMF remains dedicated to maintaining market stability.
On World Milk Day, KMF launched 18 new varieties of cakes and milk-based bakery products under the Nandini brand, further expanding its product offerings. The organization is also planning to broaden its Nandini Ghee product line internationally, leveraging the brand's reputation for quality and trust to boost its global footprint. To uphold brand integrity, KMF enforces strict brand exclusivity at its Nandini Booths.
In a strategic effort to contest market dominance by competitors, KMF is pursuing a sponsorship deal with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the IPL 2026 season. Moreover, KMF is enhancing its dairy infrastructure, having issued a tender for consultants and architects to design and construct a new ice-cream plant.
Quality Assurance
KMF is committed to upholding high-quality standards and consumer trust. Recently, the federation addressed viral rumors regarding the safety of its Nandini dairy products, confirming compliance with FSSAI standards and contemplating legal action against false claims. KMF's capability and reliability are further exemplified by its role in supplying 62% of the ghee requirements for Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.
The Karnataka Milk Federation has bolstered its monitoring processes by establishing a vigilance team. The federation oversees milk sold under the Nandini brand and conducts additional testing at dairy processing units to ensure compliance.
Nandini as the Official Dairy Partner for RCB
The Karnataka Milk Federation's brand Nandini becomes the Official Dairy Partner for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. This agreement, valued at approximately ₹4 crore, marks a significant milestone for KMF as it replaces Amul, a major competitor, on the franchise’s sponsorship roster during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has defied traditional seasonal downturns by reporting a 52% year-on-year growth in milk procurement. KMF's Managing Director, B. Shivaswamy, confirmed a 16% increase in procurement over the last few weeks, providing the cooperative with a buffer to expand its value-added product range. KMF is focusing on a high-value, nutrition-first strategy, collaborating with the state health department and the Ministry of Health to fortify its milk products.
