FSSAI Targets Social Media Influencers Amid Dairy Safety Concerns
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken a significant step by initiating criminal proceedings against several social media influencers. These influencers are accused of spreading 'baseless and malicious' claims about milk quality in India, which the regulator argues could incite public panic. The FSSAI's actions are part of its broader effort to combat digital misinformation regarding food safety.
Recent viral videos have questioned the safety of both branded and unbranded milk, with allegations of contaminants like urea and detergents. The FSSAI claims these assertions lack empirical evidence. Large cooperatives, like the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), have also threatened legal actions against such influencers to protect their market interests.
Despite the FSSAI's efforts to reassure consumers about milk safety, concerns about adulteration persist. In February 2026, a tragic incident in Andhra Pradesh saw 16 deaths linked to milk contaminated with ethylene glycol. Additionally, national surveys indicate that while harmful adulteration is statistically rare, non-compliance with quality parameters remains common, particularly in the unorganised sector.
Approximately 60% of India's milk is handled by the fragmented unorganised sector, which is harder to regulate compared to the organised cooperatives and private dairies adhering to stricter FSSAI standards. This disparity contributes to a trust gap among consumers.
The FSSAI is moving towards a 'Risk-Based Inspection' system, which aims to streamline inspections for compliant processors while tightening regulations on independent vendors. A recent mandate for independent producers to register is part of this formalisation effort.
