Controversy erupts as Karnataka's decision to allow Amul kiosks in Bengaluru Metro stations angers the opposition amid fears over local dairy brand Nandini.

The Karnataka government is facing criticism from the opposition parties after allowing the Gujarat-based dairy brand Amul to open kiosks at 10 Metro stations in Bengaluru. This move has been perceived as undermining the state-run Nandini brand. The controversy first arose ahead of the 2023 election when allegations were made against the BJP, then in power, for favouring Amul over Nandini.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar defended the decision, stating that Amul was the only applicant for the tender. However, the Janata Dal (Secular) and other opposition voices have accused the Congress of hypocrisy and of having 'sold its self-respect for the sake of commission.'
In response to the backlash, Mr. Shivakumar announced that the Karnataka Milk Federation would open Nandini outlets in eight of the 10 Metro stations. The Deputy CM emphasized that it was not appropriate to shut down existing Amul outlets. This situation has reignited concerns about supporting local farmers and brands, such as Nandini.
