Over 3,000 Milk Samples Adulterated in Karnataka's Dairy Supply Chain

During a one-year period, more than 3,000 milk samples in Karnataka were found to be adulterated, as reported by the state government. Out of 15,15,575 samples tested across 19 dairy unions, 3,049 samples were adulterated, highlighting ongoing challenges in milk quality. The government shared these findings in response to a legislative inquiry.

Hassan district recorded the highest number of adulterated cases with 788 samples, followed by Ballari with 588, Shivamogga with 434, Mandya with 418, and Kalaburagi with 315. Private dairy company Dodla Dairy was also implicated in these adulteration cases.

Despite the issue's severity, no criminal charges were filed against the milk suppliers during this period. Instead, the government focused on rejecting adulterated consignments and implementing awareness programs to prevent repeat offenses. Officials conducted regular inspections and warned cooperative societies about maintaining standards.

Common adulteration methods involved adding salt and sugar to alter the milk's density and composition. To combat this, milk adulteration testing kits have been distributed to primary milk producer societies.

The Karnataka Milk Federation has strengthened its monitoring by establishing a vigilance team to oversee milk sold under the Nandini brand. Additional testing at dairy processing units is conducted to ensure compliance. If adulteration is detected under the Nandini brand, police action will be taken.
