High Court Decision Allows Nandini's Expansion in Telangana Region

The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has gained legal approval to expand its Nandini dairy brand into broader regions of Telangana, following a high court ruling. The conflict arose from regional supply agreements established in 2015, which allowed private distributors to manage KMF's warehousing and marketing in the Hyderabad area. In August 2024, KMF decided to extend the operations of the Raichur, Ballari, and Koppal Milk Union into more districts, leading to a legal challenge from existing distributors who claimed exclusive rights over the entire state.

The high court dismissed these claims, determining that having rights in a metropolitan area does not equate to a statewide monopoly. Justice Govindaraj supported KMF's strategy to authorize its unions to enter districts such as Warangal, Adilabad, and Nizamabad, stating that this decision aligns with modern business strategies and public interest. The court's ruling prevents the artificial limitation of a cooperative's reach, thus enabling KMF to increase milk supply across new consumer areas.

Furthermore, the court instructed KMF and its milk unions to protect the existing distribution rights of the petitioners within the Hyderabad area, ensuring their operations remain unchanged. A procedural flaw was also noted in the distributors' case, as they had not participated in the 2024 tender process initiated by KMF. According to legal doctrine, entities skipping a formal tender process cannot legally contest its results or commercial impacts in court.
