India's Dairy Sector Aims for 6% Growth Amid Climate Challenges

India's milk production is expected to increase by 6% during the fiscal year 2026-27 (FY27), solidifying its position as the world's largest dairy producer. This growth is anticipated despite potential threats from erratic monsoon patterns and climate conditions such as El Niño.

The organized sector, which includes dairy cooperatives and private brands, is increasing its market share even as the unorganized sector remains dominant. This sector's resilience is underpinned by structural improvements that have historically protected it from adverse weather impacts.

However, the dairy industry is not without its challenges. Localized weather anomalies and potential climate disruptions continue to pose risks. Erratic monsoon distributions can impact milk yields, while climate-induced stresses like prolonged heat waves could affect the quality of milk by reducing fat and solids-not-fat (SNF) content.

To counteract these vulnerabilities, dairy cooperatives and private operators are investing in livestock adaptation strategies. Among the measures being implemented are cooling systems, optimized ventilation, and climate-smart feed management. These initiatives aim to support smallholder farmers and maintain the stability of milk collection networks during adverse conditions.

Looking forward, the sector's growth will be supported by strategic policies and technological advancements. Central banking and governmental initiatives are focusing on deploying integrated digital infrastructure and AI-driven platforms to assist remote producers. These efforts are designed to align advanced breeding techniques with climate resilience goals, ensuring the continued robustness of India's dairy supply chain on the global stage.
