USDA Reports Indicate Rising Butter Production Amid Global Trade Dynamics

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently released its monthly Dairy Products Report, highlighting significant trends in the butter market. In April, U.S. butter production reached 224 million pounds, an increase of 4.5% compared to April 2025, despite a slight decrease of 1.8% from March 2026. This seasonal adjustment in production aligns with growing demand as retailers prepare for the summer months.

Market dynamics have led international buyers to secure U.S. butter at competitive prices, capitalizing on favorable domestic values that remain lower than the global average. This trend is particularly evident as wholesale fat markets recover from earlier lows experienced in May.

Further bolstering the U.S. butter market, a recent $17 billion trade agreement with China could potentially expand dairy export opportunities. Historically, U.S. dairy exports to China have averaged $558.98 million annually, accounting for 367,416 metric tons. The inclusion of dairy components in future Chinese purchase orders could significantly absorb increased U.S. milk production.

In contrast, the production of whey protein concentrate (WPC) experienced a decline, dropping to 38.8 million pounds, an 11% decrease from the previous year. This decrease comes at a time when fluid milk supplies are abundant, aided by the seasonal closure of primary schools, which frees up manufacturing volumes for processors.

Overall, the USDA's report reflects a complex landscape for the U.S. dairy industry, with butter production and export potential showing strong growth, while other segments like WPC face challenges. The evolving trade dynamics, particularly with China, may play a critical role in shaping the future of U.S. dairy exports.
