CAFRE Organizes Dutch Study Tour for Fermanagh Dairy Farmers
The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) is offering a unique opportunity for dairy farmers from Fermanagh to participate in a three-day visit to the Netherlands, specifically aimed at exploring innovative and sustainable farming practices. The visit, running from September 7 to 9, forms part of the Farming for Sustainability – Innovation Scheme.
Participants will engage with Wageningen University and Research (WUR), a leading institution in agricultural innovation, to learn about key areas such as soil structure, biodiversity, and tools for monitoring soil carbon. Such technologies are designed to enhance decision-making and promote farm sustainability.
The itinerary includes a visit to De Marke dairy research farm, which focuses on long-term studies related to soil health, nutrient efficiency, and environmental performance. Attendees will observe the application of integrated soil management strategies aimed at improving soil structure, increasing organic matter, and minimizing nutrient losses.
Additionally, the program features visits to both conventional and organic dairy farms, showcasing practical soil health and carbon management techniques. These encompass the use of clover and multispecies swards, improved nutrient management, and methods to boost soil organic matter and on-farm carbon storage.
CAFRE, which operates a campus in Enniskillen, emphasizes that this visit will allow farmers to experience firsthand how research and technology are being integrated with practical farming approaches to develop low-carbon, efficient, and resilient dairy systems. The insights gained are intended to be adaptable for farms in Northern Ireland.
There are 20 places available for this study tour. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years old, not in full-time education, and should apply by July 10, 2026. Preference is given to those who have not previously participated in such a visit and who meet specific selection criteria. Participants are also required to attend pre- and post-visit training sessions. While the costs of travel, accommodation, and meals are covered, additional expenses like farm relief and travel insurance remain the participants' responsibility.
Interested farmers can apply through CAFRE, with further inquiries directed to their KT Admin.
