Uruguayan Dairy Exports Surge in May, Led by Brazilian Market
In May, Uruguay's dairy export sector experienced a significant rebound, achieving a total of $85 million in exports. This figure represents a 29% increase compared to the same month in the previous year, according to data from Uruguay XXI.
Brazil emerged as the leading destination for Uruguayan dairy products, accounting for $31 million of the exports, which constitutes 36% of the total export value for the month. This marks a 50% increase in exports to Brazil compared to May of the previous year.
Algeria followed as the second-largest importer, with $28 million worth of dairy imports, making up 33% of Uruguay's total monthly exports and showing a 12% year-on-year growth. Combined, Brazil and Algeria accounted for approximately 70% of Uruguay's dairy exports in May.
Other notable markets included Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Mauritania, each with purchases close to $3 million. The African continent continued to be a crucial region for Uruguayan dairy, representing 43% of the exports and demonstrating a 26% growth compared to the prior year.
From January to May, the total value of Uruguay's dairy exports reached $346 million, reflecting a 1% increase from the same period last year. Algeria led the annual export figures with $110 million, followed closely by Brazil with $104 million. Mexico was also a significant market, with $14 million in imports, marking a 43% increase from the previous year.
The average export price saw a recovery in May, rising to $3,710 per ton from a low of $3,550 per ton in April. Whole milk powder, Uruguay's primary dairy export, averaged $3,720 per ton. Brazil paid one of the highest prices at $3,830 per ton, while Algeria's average was $3,590 per ton.
