Sustainable Practices in Dutch Dairy Farms Highlighted During Ministerial Visit
During a recent visit to the Netherlands, Northern Ireland's Agriculture Minister, Andrew Muir, toured a sustainable dairy farm in Hoeven. The farm, managed by Johan Molenaar, spans 67 acres and is part of the Network of Practical Farms in the Netherlands. This network comprises 100 dairy farms that are actively working to tackle climate challenges by minimizing emissions of ammonia, nitrogen, and methane.
Minister Muir observed firsthand the cutting-edge research and technology being implemented to address these environmental concerns. The farm operates with 200 cows and employs innovative methods to ensure economic viability while enhancing biodiversity and water quality. Muir remarked on the importance of learning from the Dutch model to address Northern Ireland's ammonia emissions challenges.
In addition to the farm visit, Minister Muir engaged in discussions with Mark Roscam Abbing, the Dutch Director General for Rural Areas, Nature, and Fisheries. These talks in The Hague covered farm sustainability and explored opportunities to strengthen trade and knowledge exchange between Northern Ireland and the Netherlands. The discussions emphasized the importance of the ongoing relationship and potential developments under the emerging SPS agri-food and drink arrangements between the UK and the EU.
The visit underscores the commitment of both regions to promote sustainable agricultural practices and enhance bilateral trade and cooperation in the agri-food sector.
