Recovery in Dairy Production and Prices in West Buenos Aires Basin
In the West Buenos Aires basin, April saw a slowdown in milk production growth, attributed to inadequate road infrastructure and significant rainfall earlier in the year. While April's production fell 3% compared to March, it marked a slight increase of 0.5% over April of the previous year. The cumulative growth for the period from January to April closed at 7.2%, with signs of gradual recovery in May.
The pricing dynamics in the dairy sector have been challenging. In April, the price of milk increased by 1.8% in local currency over the previous month and was 8.1% higher than the same period last year. However, on the wholesale level, factory exit prices rose by 3.1% monthly and 18.5% annually. In dollar terms, prices increased by 2.9% compared to March but were down 12.3% compared to March of the previous year.
The domestic dairy market remains stable but suffers from delayed pricing adjustments. Larger industry players have been able to export as much as possible despite low profit margins, filling the gap left by smaller producers.
Infrastructure issues significantly impact smaller dairy farms, especially those located in rural areas with poor road conditions. This has been a concern for industry stakeholders, stressing the necessity for improvements in rural infrastructure to support the livelihoods of families living and working on these farms.
Institutionally, the Cámara de Productores de Leche del Oeste Bonaerense (Caprolecoba) emphasizes the need for strengthened organizational innovation within the dairy chain. The association has called for collective efforts to enhance the sector's institutional framework to better adapt to global changes and challenges.
The Fundación para la Promoción y el Estudio de la Lechería (FunPEL) has been highlighted as a key innovation, providing a private space for producers and industry stakeholders to collaborate on future strategies for the dairy business. Caprolecoba encourages producers to actively participate and overcome skepticism to support the foundation's initiatives.
