Milk Boom: New Zealand’s Dairy Production Surpasses Expectations

Wellington, NZNew Zealand’s dairy industry is experiencing a significant surge in production, with January figures far exceeding expectations. According to industry data, milk production in the country has risen dramatically, marking the highest January output since 2021.

Record-Breaking Production

New Zealand’s latest milk production data revealed an impressive 5% year-on-year increase in milksolids, reaching 211.85 million kg. This growth significantly surpasses NZX’s forecast of a 0.8% increase, signifying a robust performance in the sector. On a tonnage basis, production rose by 2.6% year-on-year to 2.39 million tonnes, 0.6% above the five-year average.

Impact on Global Markets

The uptick in production comes amid contrasting results at Global Dairy Trade (GDT) events and fluctuating milk price futures. Despite a slight dip in the GDT price index, futures for the 2025/26 season reached a noteworthy NZ$10/kgMS, providing New Zealand farmers an opportunity to secure favorable pricing.

International Export Growth

New Zealand’s dairy export performance remains strong, with a 9.6% year-on-year increase to 386,420 tonnes in January. The export value surged by 29.6%, driving the total to US$1.63 billion. Notably, China, the country’s largest dairy market, reported a 17.3% increase in total dairy imports for December, which was largely driven by significant SMP and butter imports.

Future Outlook

As the dairy season winds down, industry attention shifts to maintaining this momentum and meeting steady demand through the new season. However, factors like China’s economic conditions, domestic milk production trends, and new US tariffs remain critical in shaping future market dynamics.
