Kerry Dairy Ireland Maintains April Milk Price Amid Market Stability
Kerry Dairy Ireland (KDI) has decided to maintain its farmgate milk price for April supplies at 35.88 pence per litre, excluding VAT. When adjusted to the European Union's standard protein and butterfat constituents, this price equates to 39.31 pence per litre. This follows a previous month's price increase of 2.87 pence per litre, indicating a period of price consolidation during the European spring flush.
A KDI spokesperson remarked that global milk supplies remain robust, contributing to stable commodity markets despite ongoing geopolitical risks and supply chain uncertainties. The European dairy complex is currently experiencing a divergence in product category values. While peak seasonal milk volumes challenge processing capacities in Ireland and the UK, the underlying value components are shifting.
Overall milk supply across major Western export hubs remains high, leading to a surplus of cream and downward pressure on wholesale butter prices. Conversely, skim milk powder (SMP) and functional protein fractions have shown renewed strength, driven by international demand for ingredients and nutritional products.
For Indian dairy processors and exporters, the stability of European farmgate prices and the recovery of SMP prices are critical benchmarks. India's dairy sector is navigating its own structural challenges, including a domestic protein deficit and rising production costs. The strengthening of global SMP prices helps reduce the risk of cheap imports affecting domestic markets, providing Indian cooperatives a more stable environment for inventory management.
The global premium on functional milk solids highlights a strategic need for Indian operators to focus on value-added protein products. International processing giants are investing in protein fortification to protect margins, prompting Indian companies to transition from liquid milk logistics to more advanced ingredient processing.
