European Milk Prices Decline for Tenth Consecutive Month
The average milk price in the European Union dropped to 39.76 euros per 100 kilograms in April, marking a 1.8% decrease from March and a 21% reduction compared to the previous year, according to the latest EDF–ZuivelNL report. This decline represents the tenth consecutive month of falling prices, putting pressure on producers and the market.
Spain experienced the most significant decrease, with Capsa Food reducing its price by 7.44 euros per 100 kilograms, from 49.86 euros in March to 43.62 euros in April. This adjustment comes after months of price stability at historically high levels.
In Finland, Valio also made a notable price cut of 3.40 euros, following a ten-month period without changes. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, Saputo Dairy reduced its price by 3.48 euros due to lower dairy solids and seasonal adjustments in spring.
French companies such as Danone, Lactalis, Sodiaal, and Savencia followed the downward trend with more moderate reductions ranging from 0.34 to 1.31 euros per 100 kilograms. However, some companies managed to increase their payouts. FrieslandCampina raised its price by 2.36 euros, driven by a recovery in fat and protein values, while Germany's DMK increased its base by 2 euros in line with its integration with Arla Foods. Laiterie des Ardennes in Belgium raised prices by 1.25 euros due to strong competition for raw milk.
Valio in Finland paid the highest price in Europe at 46.02 euros per 100 kilograms, followed by Capsa Food in Spain at 43.62 euros and Sodiaal in France at 42.37 euros. On the lower end, Saputo Dairy UK offered the lowest price at 33.50 euros per 100 kilograms.
Outside Europe, the market showed mixed patterns. The United States reported improvements driven by protein values, while Fonterra in New Zealand maintained its forecasts, and Emmi in Switzerland saw slight declines.
