Dairygold Initiates Strategic Shift by Divesting UK Cheese Assets
Dairygold, an Irish agricultural cooperative, has unveiled a significant restructuring strategy focusing on its cheese operations in the United Kingdom. This plan involves putting its soft cheese manufacturing facility in Leeds up for sale and initiating a formal consultation for the potential closure of its cheese formatting plant in Crewe. Despite these changes, the cooperative has assured that both facilities will maintain regular operations to ensure continuous service to their clients.
The cooperative is taking steps to ensure the continuity of its supply chain by collaborating closely with its existing UK food manufacturing and foodservice partners. Dairygold plans to transition and maintain its cheese supply agreements directly from its primary facilities in Ireland, ensuring no disruption in the delivery of premium dairy products to its long-standing customers.
Michael Harte, Chief Executive of Dairygold, stated that this operational overhaul results from a thorough strategic review driven by evolving market conditions. He emphasized that while the UK operations have been profitable, current economic pressures necessitate a reallocation of resources to enhance the cooperative's competitiveness and sustainability.
As part of its refined strategy, Dairygold aims to strengthen its Irish dairy and agricultural infrastructure and expand its health and nutrition division. The cooperative also plans to explore new international markets to mitigate price volatility and improve margins. Nevertheless, the UK will continue to be an important market through strategic trade partnerships.
The divestment of the Leeds operation has already attracted interest from multiple potential buyers. Meanwhile, the future of the Crewe plant remains uncertain, with formal consultations beginning to discuss its possible closure. Harte commended the Crewe staff for their professionalism and promised transparent communication to support the affected employees and the local community throughout this transition.
