Castilla y León, a leader in sheep's milk production, is re-evaluating its ovine sector to boost efficiency and profitability, playing a key role in rural development.

Castilla y León, renowned for being at the forefront of sheep's milk production in Spain, is undertaking a comprehensive analysis and redefinition of its ovine sector. With over 8,200 sheep farms, about 1,900 of which specifically produce sheep milk, this sector generated an economic value exceeding €500 million in 2022. It forms a cornerstone of regional livestock, contributing significantly to rural employment and territorial cohesion.
The sector faces considerable challenges, such as a decline in the number of farms and production volume. To address this, the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Rural Development has commissioned Urcacyl to conduct a thorough sectoral study. This aims to unravel the current structure, assess farming needs in investments, generational turnover, and the impact of technological modernization on productivity.
Strategic Roadmap and Cooperatives
Cooperatives play an indispensable role in this ecosystem, with a staggering 78% of sheep milk in Castilla y León marketed through these entities. The study will also focus on initiatives in innovation, digitalization, and differentiation strategies to ensure value is added from farm to consumer.
