Amul's Strategic Expansion in West Bengal with Mega Dairy Plant
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), known for its Amul brand, is making a significant investment to expand its operations in West Bengal. The cooperative intends to inject between Rs 600 crore and Rs 650 crore into building a large-scale, integrated dairy processing facility. This development follows strategic discussions with state authorities, aimed at fostering regional economic growth.
The new plant, to be located at the Sankrail Food Park in Howrah, is set to become Amul's first wholly-owned mega dairy processing facility in the region. This facility will feature the world's largest curd manufacturing unit, establishing a new benchmark in large-scale dairy production. Equipped with advanced processing capabilities, the plant is designed to enhance the value-added dairy product segment within the regional supply chain.
State officials have expressed that integrating Amul's cooperative model into the local market is expected to stabilize milk collection from farms and increase manufacturing employment. By synchronizing local farmers with a streamlined processing pipeline, the state aims to unlock significant production capacities.
To ensure the quality and efficiency of operations, the facility will employ advanced automated testing and cold-chain technologies. This will enable rapid stabilization of raw materials, ensuring that milk collected from regional sources remains high in purity and is efficiently processed into consumer products.
Amul's expansion into eastern India signals a shift towards organized cooperative-driven food processing networks. This move aligns with the growing consumer demand for transparency and food safety, challenging traditional supply chains dominated by intermediaries.
Looking forward, industry observers will monitor the Howrah project's impact on the regional economy and its ability to influence domestic milk prices positively.
