AHDB Report Highlights Dairy's Role in Health and Environmental Goals
The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has released a new evidence review that emphasizes the critical role of dairy in both nutrition and environmental sustainability within the United Kingdom. Conducted by independent nutritionists and AHDB specialists, the report aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of dairy's contributions to the UK’s health and environmental targets.
Rachael Madeley-Davies, AHDB’s head of environment, noted the longstanding discussions around the environmental impact of dairy, highlighting the need for clear scientific data. She stated, "The role of dairy in the UK has received plenty of media attention and debate over the last few years, but the evidence around its impact on the environment is disjointed and often lacking." The review aims to consolidate evidence showing that UK dairy farming is not only efficient but is also actively pursuing sustainability goals, with emissions intensity having decreased by 22% since 1990.
Health Benefits
The report identifies dairy as a fundamental component of healthy and sustainable diets, providing an affordable source of essential nutrients in the UK. Viewing dairy as whole foods, rather than focusing solely on individual nutrients, offers greater dietary benefits, according to the review.
Environmental Contributions
Well-managed livestock systems are highlighted for their dual role in food production and environmental stewardship, including carbon storage, habitat management, and improved soil health. This contributes to the UK's net-zero aspirations.
Kate Arthur, AHDB’s head of nutrition and health, emphasized the nutritional value of dairy, describing it as a "cornerstone of UK nutrition." She stated that dairy supplies essential nutrients such as calcium, iodine, and high-quality protein throughout all life stages. Arthur added that the report intends to provide a science-led foundation for marketing and policy discussions, strengthening the sector's position in health and sustainability debates.
