StoneX Wins New Zealand Approval for Dairy Price Risk Management
StoneX Financial Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of StoneX Group Inc., has secured approval from New Zealand’s Financial Markets Authority to offer milk-price risk-management solutions to retail industry participants. The authorisation expands the company’s agricultural risk-management services into New Zealand, a major dairy-producing country.
The products are intended to help dairy businesses manage exposure to changes in milk prices. StoneX said price movements can be affected by international dairy demand, commodity markets, currency rates and supply conditions. The company’s offering is designed to give producers access to hedging instruments that can support income planning and reduce the effect of price volatility on their businesses.
StoneX identified sharemilkers as a particular focus of the initiative. These operators run farms under arrangements in which production and revenue are shared with farm owners, and the company said they have historically had limited access to advanced milk-price hedging products despite their exposure to dairy-market movements. Liam Fenton, StoneX’s global head of Dairy & Food Group, said the company wanted to make professional risk-management services more accessible and practical for producers.
The company has also introduced a digital platform for dairy-price risk management. It can be accessed through mobile devices and desktop computers and presents product information, pricing and risk-management functions in a format intended to simplify the hedging process. Farmers can use the platform to review available options and assess them against their own business requirements.
StoneX said managing part of a farm’s exposure to milk-price changes could improve visibility over future revenue and assist with decisions on investment and business planning. Matt Manning, the company’s vice-president of Commodity Derivatives, highlighted the relevance of these tools for sharemilkers and other producers whose finances remain closely linked to market prices. StoneX said the service could allow farmers to concentrate on operating and expanding their businesses while managing some market exposure.
New Zealand’s dairy industry is closely connected to international commodity prices and export demand. StoneX said its new licence increases its ability to serve dairy businesses in the country and broadens the agricultural hedging services available to them. The approval combines the company’s commodity-market expertise with a farmer-focused digital platform for use across New Zealand’s dairy supply chain.
