Hohhot, a city in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, might be considered small by Chinese standards, with a population of around 3.5-4 million in the district and about 2.5 million in the city itself.

However, it is here that the Yili Future Intelligence and Health Valley project has been launched. The project was first introduced in 2019 when the company presented it at a meeting with representatives of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region's government. By 2022, Yili’s industrial park, a dairy giant in China, had inaugurated its first four facilities. The entire project is slated for completion by 2035. Let’s examine what has been achieved so far and what is meant by a “comprehensive industrial ecosystem that integrates industrial facilities, universities, research institutions, cultural and tourism facilities, private enterprises, and residential areas” in the context of China’s dairy industry.

In the summer of 2022, Yili commissioned four major facilities, including a liquid dairy product plant, a cheese factory, an infant formula plant, a milk powder plant, an ecological pasture, and the Yili Intelligent Manufacturing Experience Center.

The valley also houses six national platforms, including the National Dairy Technology Innovation Center and the National Dairy Product Metrology and Testing Center. Investments in milk processing capacities have exceeded 5 billion yuan (over 43 billion rubles), with the facilities covering an area of 950 mu (approximately 63.7 hectares).

The Yili Intelligent Manufacturing Experience Center features the world's first 5D cinema for industrial tours of milk production processes.

Recently, Chinese media reported on several new facilities that have been completed, including those built with external investments and national program support.

In two areas of the Yili Health Valley, middle schools have opened enrollment for the 2024-2025 academic year, marking the first student intake since the schools' construction. Additionally, the establishment of the Chilechuan Hospital (a comprehensive tertiary hospital) affiliated with the Inner Mongolia Medical University, located in the Yili Health Valley, has been approved.

The Jinchuan campus of Hohhot No. 2 Middle School, also built in the valley, is situated 500 meters from the National Dairy Technology Innovation Center. The school, which received investments of 800 million yuan, occupies an area of 259 mu (about 17.2 hectares). It is equipped with modern classrooms, a library, sports fields, a cafeteria, teacher dormitories, and other facilities. The school will have relatively small class sizes, with 45 students per class.

The Chilechuan Hospital, under construction in the Yili Health Valley, will feature 30 departments, ranging from surgery and cardiology to infectious diseases and cosmetology. Upon completion, the hospital will be a comprehensive state institution, integrating medical care, prevention, rehabilitation, and emergency services.

According to reports in the Chinese segment of the Internet, the district's infrastructure construction includes a core road network of eight "heavenly highways" and an actively functioning ecological park.

The project is characterized by low residential and industrial density and a high level of greenery, creating a new benchmark for living standards and meeting residents' needs for high-quality living conditions. It is expected that by the completion of the main construction phase in 2035, more than 500,000 people will be employed in the Yili Health Valley.
