UK MPs Explore Innovation at Country's Largest Fresh Milk Plant

Nation's Largest Dairy Plant Hosts Parliamentary Visit
Cannock Chase MP Josh Newbury recently joined a delegation of ten MPs from various political factions as part of the new NFU Food and Farming Fellowship Scheme. The purpose of their visit was to explore the UK's largest fresh milk plant, operated by Arla Foods in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. This initiative, launched last year, aims to offer MPs firsthand insights into the sustainable and affordable food production cycle, from field to fork.
A Comprehensive Tour of Innovations
During the visit, the MPs engaged with state-of-the-art technology and innovative practices at Arla's facility. The day's activities commenced with a visit to a nearby dairy farm owned by one of Arla's cooperative farmers. Subsequently, the MPs toured the processing site, where they witnessed cutting-edge processes powered by renewable energy sources.
Significance of the Event
NFU Dairy Board Chair, Paul Tompkins, emphasized the importance of the fellowship, noting the vital role of British dairying. He highlighted the benefits for MPs in understanding the complexities of the industry, thanking Arla for their hospitality.
Understanding Agricultural Challenges
In a statement, Tompkins discussed the significance of supporting the agricultural sector amid various challenges, including high input costs and tax changes. He stressed the need for political engagement to ensure the future vitality and growth of British dairy farming.
Arla Foods: A Leader in Dairy Processing
Arla Foods UK, a key player in the industry, handles approximately 3.5 billion liters of milk annually and achieves a turnover exceeding £2 billion. The cooperative is owned by 8,000 dairy farmers across several European countries, underscoring its extensive reach and influence.
The 70-acre Aylesbury site, operational since February 2012, employs hundreds, including apprentices, and stands as a testament to Arla's commitment to innovation and workforce development.
The fellowship scheme aims to enhance MPs' advocacy in their constituencies and at Westminster, tackling critical issues impacting the farming sector, which is essential to the UK's largest manufacturing domain—food and drink.
