UK Dairy Carbon Network Pioneers Emission Reduction in Dairy Farms

The UK Dairy Carbon Network (UK-DCN) is an initiative aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from dairy farms across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Spearheaded by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute and financially supported by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), this project involves a consortium of research institutions, farmer levy bodies, and industry organisations.

Currently, over 50 dairy farms are participating in the project, which is structured into four networks based on geographical regions: South and South-West England/Wales; Cumbria and South-West Scotland; North-West England; and Northern Ireland. In Northern Ireland alone, approximately 20 farms are involved, showcasing a variety of calving patterns, grazing styles, and herd sizes.

The initiative is designed as a three-year project, focusing on providing tailored solutions to individual farms. Each farm receives customized measurement plans to track carbon footprint reductions through various approaches like livestock breeding, nutrition, health improvements, and nutrient management.

According to Alistair McLaren from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, the project is trackable and aims to identify emission sources, monitor changes, and find reduction opportunities without compromising productivity. Data collected includes fertiliser use, land and livestock productivity, and animal health, contributing to a partial carbon budget.

The network emphasizes sharing insights and experiences among farmers, facilitated by farm liaison officers working alongside supply chain partners. This knowledge exchange is crucial for identifying efficient strategies that are supported by scientific evidence.

UK-DCN also organizes events like farm walks and open days to promote shared learning, aiming to create a ripple effect for sustainable practices throughout the sector. The project strives to ensure that carbon savings are recognized in national reporting and policy, enhancing the resilience and sustainability of the UK dairy industry.
