Tyrone Dairy Farm Invests £750,000 in Automated Milking Technology
A dairy farm near Omagh in Tyrone has undergone a significant transformation with a £750,000 investment, enhancing its production capabilities and operational efficiency. The farm, managed by Michael and Kieran McCullagh, expanded its operations by converting its traditional milking parlour into a fully automated robotic system.
The investment has been supported by Ulster Bank, facilitating the purchase and installation of three Lely Astronaut A5 automated milking robots and an 18,000-litre milk tank. These advancements have reportedly increased the farm's milk production by 500,000 litres per year, while also improving cow comfort and overall farm operations.
The refurbishment project included the extension of an existing shed and the construction of a new one, adding 20,000 square feet of space. These structures have been equipped with heat-guard roofing made from advanced polycarbonate material, creating a cooler and brighter environment for the livestock. Additionally, the farm has implemented climate control curtain ventilation to further enhance conditions for the herd.
Kieran McCullagh highlighted the importance of Ulster Bank's support, stating that the automation has eased operational pressure, provided flexibility, and allowed them to focus on value-added activities. Liam Bradley, business development manager at Ulster Bank, noted that the investment has significantly boosted productivity and improved animal welfare.
The advancements are expected to not only cover the cost of the new technologies but also contribute to a better work-life balance for the farm's operators, allowing them to optimize their schedules according to weather conditions and other farming demands.
