Tripura Rises as Second-Largest Dairy Producer in Northeast India
Tripura has positioned itself as the second-largest milk producer in Northeast India, as confirmed by Animal Resource Development and Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das. This achievement is attributed to ongoing investments in dairy development and veterinary care. The Animal Resource Development (ARD) Department utilized 97.3% of its budget for the 2025-26 financial year and has secured a 23.33% budget increase for 2026-27 to further improve the sector.
Efforts to boost dairy production include the inauguration of a 40,000-litre-per-day milk processing plant in Bamutia, near Agartala. Additionally, a liquid nitrogen production facility has been established in RK Nagar, with more facilities planned for Udaipur and Kumarghat. These initiatives aim to support artificial insemination efforts and reduce dependency on external resources.
The department has entered into a tripartite agreement with the National Dairy Development Board and Gomati Milk Union under the White Revolution 2.0 initiative, focusing on strengthening dairy cooperatives and increasing farmers’ income. Minister Das also highlighted improvements in livestock farming, with increased fodder production, and support for backyard poultry and duck farming.
In 2025-26, veterinary services treated nearly 63.97 lakh livestock and poultry, with over 11.84 lakh animals vaccinated against Foot-and-Mouth Disease. More than 80 lakh poultry birds received vaccinations for various diseases. To enhance veterinary care, 13 Mobile Veterinary Units are operational, with plans to introduce 50 Mini Mobile Veterinary Units.
Emergency veterinary assistance is accessible through the Bharat Sanjeevani toll-free helpline. The previous financial year saw over 1.23 lakh artificial insemination procedures, resulting in more than 37,300 calves, predominantly female, which is expected to significantly boost future milk production.
