Solar-Powered Milk Chillers Enhance Dairy Operations in Rajasthan

In the Sirohi district of Rajasthan, a transformative change is underway for women dairy farmers, thanks to the introduction of solar-powered milk chillers. These chillers are part of an initiative by the Asha Mahila Milk Producer Organisation, in collaboration with WWF India, designed to enhance the quality and efficiency of milk collection and transportation.

Previously, women farmers faced challenges preserving milk due to the intense summer heat, which often led to spoilage and financial losses. The new system, featuring decentralised 'MilkoChill' units, can store 500 litres each and is powered by a 3.5 kW rooftop solar system. With a total solar capacity of 33.5 kWp, these units chill up to 5,000 litres of milk daily, maintaining temperatures of 4–6°C to prevent bacterial growth.

Asha Mahila, which started in 2016 with just 11 members, now boasts a 50,000-strong cooperative collecting over 1.5 lakh litres daily. The solar units have reduced operational costs and emissions, addressing previous issues of unreliable electricity and diesel dependency. The WWF covered the capital expenditure of approximately ₹6.5 lakh per chiller, while beneficiary households invested in infrastructure and backup connections.

Beyond technical improvements, the initiative has empowered women through financial independence and leadership opportunities. Direct payments, ownership certificates, and women-led committees have increased female participation in cooperative management and international representation.

Looking ahead, Asha Mahila plans to expand this model to more villages, with larger chiller capacities to further boost efficiency. The cooperative also supports farmers through rural markets offering feed, veterinary inputs, and tools, reinforcing the sustainable development of Rajasthan's dairy sector.
