Small Dairy Business in Punjab Grows Sales to Rs 27 Lakh Monthly

In a remarkable development for small-scale agriculture in India, two brothers from Hamidi village in Punjab have transformed their modest dairy business into a significant enterprise. Jasveer and Sukhdev Singh have grown their monthly sales from Rs 4 lakh to over Rs 27 lakh in just nine months. This growth was achieved by establishing an automatic milk processing plant, which they set up with an investment of approximately Rs 1 crore.

The Singh brothers, who previously focused on traditional farming, decided to venture into dairy processing after attending seminars that highlighted the benefits of value-added dairy products. Encouraged by experts, including Professor Gopika Talwar from Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, they focused on producing items like curd, paneer, and desi ghee.

The dairy plant, named 'Milko Fort' and commissioned in August 2025, started with a modest processing capacity of 200 liters of milk per day, which has now increased to 1,500 liters. The plant's facilities include a laboratory, Bulk Milk Cooler, and various storage systems, allowing for future expansion to its full capacity of 8,000 liters per day.

The brothers financed their venture with a Rs 40 lakh loan under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme and a Rs 10 lakh subsidy from the same scheme. Additional funds were sourced from family and local supporters. The business now employs the entire Singh family and around a dozen others, contributing to the local economy.

The brothers have embraced digital marketing, with orders coming through dealers and platforms like WhatsApp. They have also invested in logistics, purchasing four commercial vehicles to aid in milk collection and product distribution.

Despite their success, the Singh family's priorities remain debt repayment and business expansion. They maintain a strict quality control regime, ensuring all milk is tested in their laboratory before processing, and emphasize that customer trust is paramount to their business model.

Their story is an inspiring example of how innovation and strategic investment can empower traditional farmers to create thriving businesses in rural India.
