The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) confirmed the findings on Monday, November 2. It described the detections as “not unexpected” and said they demonstrated that Britain's livestock surveillance and diagnostic arrangements could identify emerging diseases.

Shamonda is thought to be transmitted by biting midges belonging to the genus Culicoides. Animals in several European countries have tested positive this year. Defra had earlier confirmed an August detection in cattle in Jersey.

Ireland recorded its first detection last month. A private laboratory in the south identified the virus in cattle samples collected from farms in that region. Three animals across two holdings tested positive; both holdings were understood to be dairy farms.

Cattle are the principal animals affected by the virus. Clinical signs include fever, diarrhoea and lethargy, alongside a decline in milk output. Abortions have also been recorded among infected cattle.

Defra said Shamonda is neither notifiable nor reportable. On the evidence currently available, the department said additional measures to control the disease were not warranted. It will work with the Welsh and Scottish governments and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) to track the epidemiological situation, reviewing its response as more evidence becomes available.

Livestock keepers were advised to watch their animals for signs of illness and consult their own veterinarian if concerned. Defra also recommended treating affected animals as early as possible according to their clinical signs.
