The new partnership between GADVASU and the PDFA focuses on boosting Punjab's milk production and genetic enhancement through a cost-efficient semen bank.

A new partnership between the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) and the Progressive Dairy Farmers’ Association (PDFA) is set to boost Punjab's milk output and support genetic advancement. This collaboration aims at addressing the difficulties farmers face in accessing high-quality and cost-effective semen, by creating a sustainable model of livestock growth. A seminal part of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between these entities is a genetic program that focuses on the renowned milk-producing breeds, Holstein Friesian (HF) and Jersey. Under the agreement, elite male calves from PDFA-owned cows are carefully selected to produce high-quality frozen semen.
This semen will be distributed back to farmers, enhancing the genetic pool and offering a more reliable and affordable source of superior genetics. Currently, Punjab ranks as a leading breeder state for high-genetic-merit cows in India, with HF and crossbred cattle accounting for about 80% of the state’s cattle population and contributing to 40% of the milk production. The initiative is poised to solidify Punjab's position as a hub for elite dairy cattle, appealing to farmers nationwide who seek high-quality animals. This revolutionary partnership not only aims to propel local milk production but also sets a replicable example for agribusiness development across India and globally.
