Partnership to Establish Compressed Biogas Plant in Assam

The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Suzuki R&D Centre India Pvt. Ltd. (SRDI), and North East Dairy and Foods Ltd. (NEDFL) have entered a partnership to set up a compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Assam. This initiative was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in the presence of key figures including Toshihiro Suzuki, President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, and Meenesh Shah, Chairman of NDDB.

NEDFL, a joint venture between the Government of Assam and NDDB, will be responsible for executing the project. The company, known for marketing dairy products under the Purabi brand, will also oversee the operation of the CBG plant and the sale of its products. NDDB will provide technical and institutional support, while Suzuki R&D India will invest in the project, aiming to benefit from carbon reduction initiatives.

The plant will convert agricultural and dairy waste into compressed biogas, which can be used as a clean fuel for vehicles and industrial applications, offering an alternative to fossil fuels. This conversion process is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote scientific waste management.

Additionally, the initiative is projected to generate new income sources for farmers by creating value from waste materials. The organic fertilizer produced will support sustainable agriculture by enhancing soil health. Meenesh Shah emphasized the alignment of this project with Assam's natural agricultural practices, which are known for being near-natural.

Suzuki has been involved in nine biogas projects across India, with two operational plants in Gujarat. Toshihiro Suzuki noted that the new MoU in Assam reflects Suzuki's commitment to promoting biogas adoption in India.

Overall, the project is expected to advance sustainable development in Assam by integrating clean energy production with responsible waste management. This collaboration among NDDB, Suzuki R&D India, and NEDFL underscores their collective commitment to environmentally sustainable solutions that benefit farmers, industry, and society.
