Northern Ireland's New Sustainable Agriculture Programme Aims for a Greener Future

Andrew Muir, the Minister for the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), has unveiled the Sustainable Agriculture Programme (SAP) in Northern Ireland, repositioning it from its previous identity as the Farm Support and Development Programme. The revamp is aimed at supporting the sustainability transition within NI's agricultural sector.

According to DAERA, the SAP will address four key outcomes: enhanced productivity, resilience, environmental sustainability, and an optimized supply chain. The intention is to fortify the industry against contemporary challenges while maintaining its economic contribution.

At a recent Dairy Council for NI conference, Muir praised the local dairy industry, which produces over 2.4 billion litres of milk annually, exporting globally. He emphasized the industry’s importance to the local economy, with milk accounting for 31% of the gross agricultural output in 2023.

“I wholeheartedly believe in the potential of our agriculture sector to meet the need for nutritious food while tackling climate and nature crises,” stated Muir.

The minister also introduced DAERA's 'Farming with Nature' package, promising rewards for farmers who deliver environmental benefits. This package will eventually become a cornerstone of SAP, promoting nature-friendly farming practices.

Muir concluded with plans to discuss the 'Farming with Nature’ package further at the Balmoral Show, ensuring a phased rollout with legislative prerequisites.
