New Zealand Dairy Sector Reports Record Production and Strong Financial Gains

DairyNZ's 20th annual survey has underscored New Zealand's dairy industry as a significant economic driver, reporting record production levels for the 2025–26 season. The season closed with national milksolids production forecasted to reach approximately 2.02 billion kgMS, surpassing the two-billion mark for the first time and marking a 4.5% increase over the previous season's 1.94 billion kgMS.

The 2024–25 season had already been a notable year, with increased payouts and enhanced milksolids production per cow and per hectare contributing to stronger returns for farmers. A significant achievement during this period was the reduction in dairy farmer debt, as noted by DairyNZ.

The financial health of dairy farms has improved, with many entering the winter season with robust balance sheets due to strong production and solid payouts. However, the industry faces challenges from rising costs, particularly in areas such as fertiliser and fuel, which farmers anticipate persisting into the next season.

DairyNZ advises the sector to maintain cautious optimism as it transitions into the new season. Recommendations include stress-testing budgets, being strategic with fertiliser use, incorporating flexibility into seasonal feed strategies, and maintaining a cash buffer to manage potential financial fluctuations.

Despite cost-related concerns, the dairy sector's current position remains relatively strong, with the milk price staying above $9/kgMS for two consecutive seasons, which supports the industry's resilience.
