New Zealand Launches $20.9 Million Dairy Beef Opportunities Programme
The New Zealand government has announced a significant investment of $20.9 million in the Dairy Beef Opportunities (DBO) programme, designed to expand the country's dairy-beef sector. This programme is a joint effort involving DairyNZ, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, the Meat Industry Association, and the Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand, with financial backing from the Ministry for Primary Industries through the Primary Sector Growth Fund.
The DBO programme targets three main areas: improving genetics and systems to boost calf breeding and rearing efficiency, smarter breeding and lactation strategies to increase the number of calves entering the beef system, and developing new value chains to provide innovative products and supply chain solutions. Simon Limmer, Chair of the DBO Governance Group, emphasized the programme's role in enhancing integration between dairy and beef systems to benefit farmers and processors.
A key objective is to unlock the value of non-replacement dairy calves that are not needed for replenishing dairy herds. This initiative is expected to strengthen New Zealand's reputation for producing premium, sustainable, and ethically raised food, ultimately supporting the government's goal to double export value by 2034.
Tracy Brown, Chair of DairyNZ, highlighted the potential for the dairy-beef sector to drive meaningful change and create new opportunities for farmers. Meanwhile, Kate Acland, Chair of Beef + Lamb New Zealand, noted that the programme would offer farmers more confidence and options to maximize the value from their animals.
The programme represents a strong collaboration across the sector, bringing together organisations from various parts of the value chain. This initiative aims to increase productivity and profitability for dairy and beef farmers, ensuring long-term sector success.
