New Breeding Strategies Enhance Dairy Cow Health and Efficiency
The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has released new rankings for Holstein sires, showcasing a significant focus on health and efficiency in dairy cattle breeding. Leading the rankings is Denovo 22750 Lorenzo, a new entrant known for enhancing daughter fertility and udder health, extending cow lifespan by 174 days on average. Lorenzo boasts a HealthyCow score of £254 and a Profitable Lifetime Index (PLI) of £874, marking a shift towards healthier and longer-lasting cows.
The rankings have reshuffled significantly, with all top ten positions occupied by new entrants since December. In second place, Peak AltaRotation features a PLI of £867, excelling in protein performance with a Predicted Transmitting Ability of +0.14% and 37.3kg. Third-placed Peak AltaFanbase, with a PLI of £854, focuses on fat production and offers a Feed Advantage score of 291.
Further notable sires include Peak AltaVaughn in fourth, known for strong fat and protein transmission, and Denovo 6856 Hotshot in fifth, recognized for high milk solids. Sixth-ranked Genosource Judo leads in milk yield at 1,239kg and protein yield at 44.6kg. The rankings emphasize a trend towards breeding decisions that enhance productivity and sustainability in dairy farming.
