Madhya Pradesh Aims to Become India's Leading Milk-Producing State
The Madhya Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, is set on making the state the 'milk capital' of India. During a conference in Gwalior, Yadav emphasized the state's commitment to enhancing the rural economy through robust support for dairy farmers. He announced that the government is prepared to invest significantly in the dairy sector to achieve this goal.
The state plans to provide financial assistance of up to ₹10 lakh to promote the establishment of new dairy units. Yadav highlighted that Madhya Pradesh currently ranks third in milk production nationwide and aims to secure the top position. To support this ambition, the government will ensure fair pricing for milk producers and establish large shelters for stray cattle, such as the Lal Tipara gaushala, which houses approximately 10,000 cattle.
In addition to these initiatives, the government is working on infrastructure improvements, including the opening of an animal feed unit and wellness center in Gwalior, and a new veterinary hospital in Dabra. Moreover, the state has been actively investing in agricultural welfare, with ₹55,000 crore disbursed under the Ladli Behna scheme.
The Gwalior region, identified as a key contributor to this dairy push, currently has 68,737 cattle rearers managing over four lakh livestock and producing 605 tonnes of milk. The government also plans to link rivers to enhance irrigation, which will support both agriculture and dairy farming.
Yadav also mentioned the introduction of cow ambulance services and the production of organic manure, milk, and ghee from gaushalas. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance the welfare of farmers and improve the overall productivity of the state's dairy sector.
