James Waterhouse to Lead Ayrshire Cattle Society Amidst Dairy Sector Challenges
James Waterhouse, a prominent dairy farmer from Fourth Milestone Farm in North Yorkshire, will assume the role of President of the Ayrshire Cattle Society of Great Britain and Ireland in May. His farm, which has been in his family for three generations, specializes in breeding Ayrshire cows known for their longevity and economical milk production. The farm has also expanded its Ayrshire Cattle Services to include international semen sales and exports.
Despite current milk prices dropping to around 33-34 pence per litre, which is nearly 50% less than last year, Waterhouse's farm remains resilient. The farm operates a grass-based system across 350 cows, including 25 pedigree Ayrshires, with an average production of 5,500 litres per cow. Ayrshires on the farm achieve higher averages of 6,500-7,000 litres due to their efficient forage conversion.
The farm, which transitioned fully to dairy in 2012, utilizes a Waikato swingover milking parlour and has seen significant herd growth through a contract farming agreement. This partnership allowed the herd to expand to 300 cows with a focus on spring calving and grass-based nutrition. The farm's current herd includes New Zealand crossbred cows, and all calves are managed through a strategic system involving sexed and conventional semen to maintain herd quality and productivity.
Waterhouse highlights the benefits of a tight calving period, reducing serving time from 12 weeks in 2012 to 8 weeks by 2024. This efficient calving schedule not only enhances herd management but also aligns with market demands. The farm's commitment to grass-based farming includes using herbal leys and improving soil organic matter, contributing to sustainable dairy production.
As the new President, Waterhouse is eager to engage with the Ayrshire community across the UK, participating in shows and competitions. His leadership comes at a time when the Ayrshire breed is gaining recognition for its genetic improvements, offering high butterfat and protein milk suitable for modern dairy demands.
