Irish Dairy Sector Launches Comprehensive Sustainability Strategy
Dairy Industry Ireland (DII), representing the Irish dairy processing sector, has unveiled a comprehensive new strategy titled 'Pathway to Sustainable Dairy.' This initiative, developed by Dairy Sustainability Ireland, was launched by Martin Heydon, the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine. The strategy aims to secure the long-term viability of Ireland's dairy sector by aligning closely with upcoming EU policies, including the EU Livestock Strategy and the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
Key priorities of the strategy include increased investment, enhanced water quality measures, and targeted emissions reductions. By 2030, the plan commits to cutting farm-level emissions by 25% and processor emissions by 35%, compared to 2018 levels. This environmental focus will be supported by the implementation of Farming for Water action plans across the sector by 2028, involving at least 50 water quality advisors and 2,000 annual farm assessments.
On-farm innovations, such as genotyping and the use of sexed semen, are expected to boost animal care, with a goal of achieving a 75% milk recording rate by 2027. To support these sustainable practices, processors will invest €35 million annually, emphasizing economic resilience to protect rural livelihoods.
The strategy's progress will be monitored through transparent, science-based data systems, with mandatory annual public reporting. Recent data highlights a 9% reduction in farm-level emissions intensity and a 3% decrease in processor emissions, even as production volumes grew by 20%.
Ireland remains a leader in water quality among European dairy producers. The dairy sector supports 54,000 full-time jobs and generates €17.6 billion across 17,000 farm families, underscoring its economic significance.
Kevin Maher, representing Dairy Sustainability Ireland, emphasized the sector's commitment to measurable sustainability impacts. Dave Fitzgerald, Chair of the Dairy ESG Group, noted the strategy's focus on balancing environmental progress with economic sustainability, essential for the future of Irish dairy farming.
