Irish Dairy Farmers and Athletes Join Forces for Nutritional Gains

The National Dairy Council (NDC) and Sport Ireland Institute have launched a three-year partnership to support Ireland's elite athletes with a dairy-based breakfast programme. The initiative, announced on June 3, aligns with the athletes' preparation for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Emma Walls, the NDC's chief executive, emphasized the shared commitment to marginal gains between dairy farmers and athletes. She noted that just as talent alone does not guarantee success in sports, Ireland's natural advantages in dairy farming require hard work to compete globally.

The programme aims to highlight the role of dairy products in athletic performance, recovery, and health. Double Olympic champion Paul O'Donovan, from a West Co. Cork farm, endorsed the initiative, underscoring the importance of a nutritious breakfast in training routines.

Recent research commissioned by the NDC surveyed over 1,000 Irish adults on their breakfast habits. It found that while 84% value a healthy breakfast, convenience heavily influences choices. Carbohydrate-based options are preferred by 41%, while 49% opt for cereal or granola with milk or yoghurt.

NDC senior nutritionist Dr. Mary Harrington explained the benefits of milk for athletes, citing its carbohydrate content for refueling and its combination of casein and whey proteins for muscle recovery. Milk also provides essential electrolytes and calcium for rehydration and bone health.

The survey also highlighted that while 95% of respondents recognize the importance of rehydration after exercise, only 10% choose milk as their recovery drink, with the majority preferring water or electrolyte drinks.
