Innovative Dairy Management Boosts Production in Brazilian Farms

In Brazil, two dairy farms have demonstrated significant improvements in milk production by focusing on internal management and technology rather than large-scale expansion. Located in Minas Gerais and Paraná, these farms have adopted innovative practices that have yielded impressive results.

Case Study: Córrego do Monjolo Farm, Minas Gerais

The Córrego do Monjolo farm in Minas Gerais, managed by Melquisedeque Alves de Oliveira and Rosemary Gonçalves, transformed its production processes through careful planning, genetic enhancement, and technical support. Initially managing a small area of 11 hectares, the farm achieved a daily milk production of 403 liters, totaling 147,363 liters annually, as reported by Educampo Leite.

The farm's transformation began in 1998 with a shift away from traditional methods toward goal-oriented management. Key innovations included participation in the Sebraetec FIV program in 2020, which enabled access to in vitro fertilization technology, resulting in a more productive herd. By 2025, the farm's productivity reached 22.96 liters per cow daily, surpassing the program's average of 18.49 liters.

Case Study: Barra Preta Farm, Paraná

Barra Preta Farm in Pitanga, Paraná, followed a different strategy but with a similar focus on efficiency. Since 2019, with support from SIA Brasil, the farm increased its average milk yield per cow from 26-28 liters to 42 liters, occasionally reaching 45 liters.

The farm improved its feeding practices by optimizing cow diets to address protein excess, which facilitated an increase in the lactating herd size from 60 to over 90 cows. This growth highlighted the need for improved feeding infrastructure, leading to the adoption of a compost barn model, which enhanced feed provision and enabled a shift from pasture-based to confined feeding systems.

Management and Economic Impact

Both farms underscore the importance of management in dairy production. At Córrego do Monjolo, individual monitoring of cows for nutrition and health was implemented, while approximately 22% of the farm's gross income in 2025 was reinvested in improvements and genetic advancements.

Barra Preta Farm's enhanced production capabilities helped mitigate operational costs during periods of declining milk prices. Techniques such as feed control, lot separation, and individual milk measurement played a crucial role in maintaining farm stability.

These cases highlight that before seeking more land or livestock, dairy producers can achieve growth by transforming their management and efficiency strategies into productive assets.
