Indonesia's Dairy Sector Faces Shortfall Amid Self-Sufficiency Goals

Indonesia is confronting a substantial deficit in its dairy sector, necessitating the addition of 1.4 million dairy cows to reach complete milk self-sufficiency. Current data from the Ministry of Agriculture indicates that the country's dairy herd consists of approximately 540,657 cattle, far below the needed 2 million to meet domestic demand.

The Director of Livestock Product Downstream at the Ministry of Agriculture, Makmun, emphasized the urgency of expanding the cattle population. This expansion presents lucrative opportunities for global genetics exporters, livestock traders, and international agribusiness investors, as Indonesia seeks to bolster its food security and reduce reliance on imported dairy products.

Statistics Indonesia reports that the national average milk yield stands at about 12.5 liters per cow per day. The relatively low output necessitates a large increase in cattle numbers to improve total production, posing logistical and infrastructural challenges across agricultural regions.

Despite the ambitious goals, the Ministry suggests that the expansion might be reduced if domestic productivity improves. By enhancing genetics, optimizing feed, and investing in advanced housing technologies, it is possible to increase milk output per cow, potentially decreasing the number needed to meet targets.

Significant investments will be required in processing infrastructure, including cold-chain logistics and raw material collection points, to support the anticipated increase in dairy production. As Indonesia targets milk self-sufficiency, the international dairy community is closely monitoring these developments for potential impacts on global dairy trade.
