India Secures Leading Role in Global Milk Production

India maintains its position as the world's largest milk producer, accounting for approximately 24% to 25% of the global milk supply. This achievement is largely attributed to the efforts of millions of smallholder farmers and the country's extensive dairy cooperative network.

India's dairy production is anchored by a substantial population of cattle and water buffaloes, the latter providing high-fat milk essential for traditional dairy products such as ghee and paneer. Over the years, the implementation of targeted breeding programs and improved veterinary care has significantly increased milk yields per animal.

The cooperative movement, initiated during the 1970s under Operation Flood, has played a pivotal role in linking rural producers with urban markets. Organizations like Amul have established collection centers and cold chain infrastructure, ensuring quality-based payments to farmers.

Following India in global dairy production are countries like the United States, China, Pakistan, and Brazil. These nations typically rely on large-scale commercial herds and advanced processing techniques. However, India's volume of production remains unrivaled due to its unique smallholder-based model.

Despite leading in raw milk production, there are ongoing opportunities for India to enhance value-added processing and international exports. Government initiatives are currently focusing on organized procurement, improved cold chain logistics, and enhanced animal health protocols to strengthen India's position in the global dairy sector.
