India's Digital Revolution in Dairy: NDDB's Technological Advancements
India, the world's largest milk producer, is setting global standards in digital dairy transformation through the efforts of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). A key initiative is the National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM), developed in collaboration with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying. This program has introduced the 'Pashu Aadhaar', a 12-digit unique identification for livestock, which has registered over 356.8 million animals to date.
The Automatic Milk Collection System (AMCS) is another major innovation, operational in 12 states and Union Territories. This system supports over 26,000 Dairy Cooperative Societies and 1.73 million milk producers, ensuring transparency in milk procurement through real-time SMS updates and integrated analytics. As of October 2025, 243,000 farmers have registered on the AMCS mobile app.
NDDB's Dairy ERP (NDERP) platform, built on Frappe ERPNext, integrates various dairy operations from procurement to sales, enhancing data visibility and decision-making. Additionally, the Semen Station Management System (SSMS) digitizes the production of Frozen Semen Doses, ensuring adherence to national protocols and traceability through RFID technology.
The Internet-based Dairy Information System (i-DIS) provides real-time data across 198 milk unions and other dairy entities, facilitating strategic planning. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are also being used to optimize milk distribution routes, initially launched in Maharashtra and now expanded to other states.
These initiatives reflect NDDB's commitment to transforming India’s dairy sector into a digitally empowered, efficient, and transparent industry.
