GEA Expands Digital Dairy Capabilities with New AI Software Lab in Belfast
GEA, a leader in dairy farming technology, has inaugurated a new software lab in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This initiative seeks to enhance its digital dairy farming capabilities, particularly through the development of its AI-driven platform, CattleEye. The lab is set to create 20 new R&D positions, focusing on advancing GEA's DairyNet farm management solutions.
The CattleEye platform, which utilizes computer vision and machine learning, is designed to detect early signs of lameness in cows and assess body condition, enabling proactive herd management. Currently, it operates across more than 140 farms in 23 countries, monitoring over 200,000 cattle.
GEA acquired CattleEye in 2024 to bolster its digital technology offerings. The Belfast facility will support further AI integration, aiming to improve the functionality of the DairyNet mobile app used for herd management. This expansion aligns with GEA's global strategy to scale digital technologies in dairy production.
The project has received financial backing from Invest Northern Ireland and the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund. Vicky Kell, director at Invest NI, emphasized that this investment underscores Northern Ireland's growing capabilities in the agri-tech sector.
The new lab is expected to not only enhance herd management but also contribute to sustainability efforts by optimizing animal health and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
