Galicia Intensifies Dairy Crisis: The Cheapest Milk in Spain

In May 2025, the average price of cow's milk in Galicia was 48.8 cents per liter, falling below the national average of 50.1 cents/liter and the EU average of 53.03 cents/liter. This regional difference creates a disparity of up to 9 cents per liter even among neighboring farms.
This low pricing occurs against the backdrop of rising prices across Europe, where the community market has seen increases of up to 19.8% in countries like Denmark and the Netherlands, with average prices reaching 53.03 cents/liter in May and 53.15 €/100 kg in June, a 15.2% year-on-year increase.
Simultaneously, milk production in Galicia decreased by nearly 2% in the first five months of 2025, mirroring a trend in Europe where Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain reported declines exceeding 2%.
The decline in profitability is affecting the production structure; in 2024, 359 farms closed in Galicia, and between January and April 2025, another 92 were lost, impacting rural competitiveness and economic dynamism.
Faced with this situation, Galician farmers are intensifying their demands for fairer contracts, a review of abusive clauses, and alignment with international prices, warning that without structural changes, the future of the regional dairy farming sector is at serious risk.
