Pappas highlighted the potential economic impact, estimating losses that could reach 'hundreds of millions of rands,' affecting not only farmers and their employees but also the broader agricultural supply chain. He stressed the urgency of containment efforts, especially with the festive season approaching, which traditionally sees increased movement of livestock for various purposes.
To prevent further transmission, Pappas urged the provincial government to seek assistance from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). Their roles would include enforcing livestock movement controls, setting up roadblocks, and ensuring quarantine measures are strictly followed.
He noted the current strain on the agricultural sector in KwaZulu-Natal and warned that delays in intervention could result in long-term economic damage. The provincial government, he stated, must act swiftly to protect the farmers, rural communities, and the province's contributions to national food production.
In light of the outbreak, Pappas declared readiness to support any efforts aimed at containment, underlining the necessity for strong and coordinated interventions to manage the crisis effectively.
