Farm Data Exchange Pilot Seeks to Enhance Dairy Data Management

The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) is testing a Farm Data Exchange initiative, previously known as the Farm Data Custodian, to tackle data sharing, duplication, and ownership issues in the beef and dairy sectors. The pilot program is designed to allow farmers to maintain control over their data while sharing necessary information with industry partners.

The current pilot engages 18 farm businesses, concentrating on environmental reporting challenges. It is scheduled to conclude in February and includes key partners such as the British Cattle Movement Service and the Rural Payments Agency. AHDB aims to reduce inefficiencies and improve data accuracy through this initiative.

Adam Short, associate director for data programs at AHDB, emphasized that the model keeps data with the original holder, allowing farmers to control data sharing. He stated, “We don’t hold the data. We leave the data where it is and let the farmers control how it is shared.”

Beyond reducing administrative burdens, AHDB sees the exchange as a way to provide economic benefits by improving data sharing. The initiative may allow farmers to access better loan terms or insurance rates by evidencing environmental compliance.

The pilot also explores the potential inclusion of veterinary and animal health data, expanding its scope beyond environmental reporting. Despite concerns about data sharing, AHDB asserts that demand for farm-level data will continue to grow.
