Environment Agency Proposes New Permit for Saputo Dairy UK to Enhance Production
The Environment Agency has initiated a consultation process for a new permit aimed at Saputo Dairy UK, formerly known as Dairy Crest Ltd, which operates the Davidstow creamery. This new permit is designed to introduce environmental improvements and allow an increase in cheese production by refining the production process.
The creamery, which produces cheese and whey, has faced issues related to water pollution, noise, and odour in the past. These issues led the Environment Agency to label it as a persistently poorly performing site in the 2024-25 Chief Regulator’s report. Significant progress has been made since then, and the proposed permit includes stricter controls to protect the environment and local community.
Among the key changes in the new draft permit are increased cheese production capabilities and the cessation of demineralised whey production. It also sets new emission limits and introduces additional monitoring for wastewater discharge. Noise and odour mitigation measures have been formalized within the permit to ensure compliance.
The consultation is open to the public and interested groups until February 13, 2026. Feedback can be submitted via the Environment Agency's online consultation portal or through email and postal services. The agency will consider all comments before making a final decision on the permit issuance.
Chris James, the industry regulation team leader at the Environment Agency, stated, "We initiated this permit review to bring about environmental improvements and protect the River Inny. The new permit will reduce the site’s impact on the environment while allowing the company to grow their operations and benefit the local economy."
The Environment Agency has clarified that a permit can only be refused if it does not meet environmental legislation requirements or if it poses an unacceptable impact on the environment or human health.
