Edeka Partners with Regional Dairies to Reduce Agricultural Emissions
Germany's Edeka, along with Netto Marken-Discount, is implementing a climate protection initiative in collaboration with four regional dairies, namely EMP Milchhof Prenzlau, NordseeMilch, Royal A-Ware, and Molkerei Gropper. This project is designed to establish standardized methods for reducing agricultural emissions in conventional milk supply chains, with the aim of creating a model applicable across the sector.
The dairies involved bring expertise from various regions, including eastern and central Germany, northern cooperative farms, and the Netherlands. This collaboration focuses on developing practical, data-driven measures that are feasible for conventional supply chains, incorporating farmers' perspectives to ensure solutions are grounded in real-world production conditions.
In the current phase, Edeka is working on a standard for data collection and emissions calculation aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Leuphana University Lüneburg provides scientific guidance, and management consulting firm Quantis offers independent project management and methodological support.
The partners are assessing existing measures based on climate impact, economic viability, and feasibility. They are also designing training programs and field tests for farmers. The initiative aims to develop a transparent and transferable climate protection model for the dairy sector.
