Coen and Marieke Wantenaar, third-generation dairy farmers in the Netherlands, offer a glimpse into the future of dairy farming. Running Wantenaardig Dairy on 82 hectares near Utrecht, the couple milks 110 cows three times a day, producing 11,000 liters per cow annually. Their focus is on meeting sustainability, welfare, and environmental standards to secure premium payments from FrieslandCampina, the co-operative they supply, according to edairynews.com.

While Coen acknowledges that dairy farming in the Netherlands faces significant regulatory challenges, he believes the rewards for compliance can be substantial. “If you're smart and add it all together, it can be worthwhile,” he says. Meeting environmental criteria, including grazing management and biodiversity, allows the Wantenaars to earn additional premiums of up to 5c per liter.

The new regulations, including limits on nitrogen application and the push for nature conservation, are reshaping the landscape. However, Coen remains optimistic, stating, “There is definitely a future for dairying in the Netherlands, but the question is in which direction?”

Despite challenges, including high land prices and environmental restrictions, Coen is focused on sustainability and productivity, believing that the future of dairy farming lies in innovation, efficiency, and strategic environmental management.
