Calls for Government Action to Standardize Prices of Dairy-Free Products
Food workers have called for government intervention to standardize the prices of lactose and dairy-free products. This request was made during a recent gathering of the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU), where delegates accepted a motion highlighting that the current pricing of these alternatives is inflated for profit. The motion argues that the additional costs imposed on consumers are unjustified.
Patrycja Grabowska, a health and safety representative, emphasized that for many individuals, lactose-free products are essential rather than mere alternatives. She stated, "Accessibility should never be treated like a luxury. We need these products to become more affordable for those who need them." Grabowska pointed out the lack of regulation and transparency in the production of these products, urging the government to step in to standardize the British dairy-free market.
Supporting the motion, West Yorkshire delegate Zeal Manchin stressed the environmental importance of making dairy alternatives more affordable. He noted that the dairy industry has a significant impact on the climate, and making milk alternatives more accessible could help reduce the industry's influence within society.
The BFAWU's call for action reflects a broader concern among food workers about the accessibility and affordability of essential dietary products. The union's stance is that these items should not be priced in a way that makes them inaccessible to those who require them for health reasons.
While the motion specifically targets the pricing of lactose-free and dairy-free products, it also touches upon broader issues of food pricing and regulation. The BFAWU's position is that government intervention is necessary to ensure fair pricing practices and to support consumers who rely on these products.
